Introduction
Finance is often split into two major worlds: Market Finance and Corporate Finance. This course is designed to build a strong, visual intuition for both by focusing on their core foundations.
Corporate Finance vs. Market Finance
1. Corporate Finance: Inside the Firm
Corporate finance deals with how businesses run, how they make decisions to invest in projects, and how they manage their money internally.
- The Goal: Maximize the value of the company and ensure it has enough cash to operate.
- The Foundation: Accounting. Accounting is the language of business. To understand corporate finance, you must first understand how to track money coming in and going out. Without basic accounting (Balance Sheets, Income Statements, and Cash Flows), a business owner is flying blind—and could easily run out of cash even while making a "paper profit".
2. Market Finance: Outside in the Markets
Market finance is about the flow of money between investors, savers, companies, and governments through external financial markets.
- The Goal: Price assets correctly, manage risk, and allocate capital efficiently across the economy.
- The Foundation: Interest Rates & Bonds. Interest rates are the "rent" of money, and bonds are the most fundamental contracts in the financial markets (IOUs). Every stock, real estate property, or derivative is ultimately priced using the time-value-of-money concepts that come from interest rates and bonds. If you don't understand how a change in interest rates affects a bond's price, you cannot understand how global markets move.
Course Structure
This course helps bridge the gap between "school math" and real-world finance.
Teen students:
- interact with simulators to see numbers move in real-time
- write and run python scripts for controlled simulations
Day 1 & 2: Market Finance Foundations
- Module A — The Rent of Money (Interest Rates): Discover why money has time value, and play with compounding frequencies.
- Module B — The IOU Market (Bonds & Yield Curves): Experience the classic seesaw relationship between interest rates and bond prices, and visualize yield curves.
Day 3 & 4: Corporate Finance Foundations
- Module C — The Shoe Business (Basic Accounting): Learn the Balance Sheet and Income Statement by running a virtual shoe shop.
- Module D — The Cash Trap (Cash Flow vs. Profit): Simulate payment delays to see why profitable businesses can still go bankrupt.
Beyond the Basics
Remember, this course is just the beginning! Finance is a vast, exciting field. Beyond these foundations, you will find:
- In Market Finance: Derivatives, portfolio theory, risk management, quantitative trading, and algorithmic models.
- In Corporate Finance: Mergers & acquisitions (M&A), venture capital, valuation of complex companies, capital structure optimization, and corporate strategy.
This introduction gives you the core tools and visual intuition. Once you master these, the rest is just building on top of the same foundational logic!
